M503 is a yellow and clear oil-like liquid. It is formulated with a mineral oil, surfactants, an immunostimulating molecule and other ingredients. When mixed with antigen at equal mass ratio under a low-speed blending, M503 instantly forms an water-in-oil-in-water (WOW) nanoemulsion through a process called self-emulsification. No special equipment other than a formulation tank is needed for making WOW using M503.  The WOW nanoemulsion has a typical size of 200-300nm and is very stable. WOW releases antigen in two phases: 1) antigen in the external aqueous phase is immediately available after injection for stimulating immune responses; 2) The antigen in the internal aqueous phases is released gradually over a period of 7-10 days to provided continued stimulation for a long lasting antibody and cellular immune responses.  M503 has been used successfully applied to with foot and mouth disease vaccine to immunize pigs, sheep and cattle.  M503 is also used in porcine circovirus vaccine and chicken vaccines.  The product has been shown to be safe and effective in many animal species.  

As an example, M503 adjuvant and commercial adjuvant were used in foot-and-mouth disease vaccine to immunize 40 kg pigs. The results showed that M503 had significantly stronger adjuvant effect than the commercial adjuvant in eliciting blocking ELISA antibodes. .
